How Society Became Socially Discontent And Disillusioned...

Both Novels explore how society became socially discontent and disillusioned due to post war circumstances. This is depicted by both Coward and Hemmingway throughout the symbolism of Alcohol and drugs being used to satisfy boredom and discontent. This is apparent in â€Å"The Vortex† when Nicky details his drug habit to Helena by telling her â€Å"I only take just the teeniest bit once in a blue moon.† Whilst Hemmingway intended to depict an alternative social view from a generation directly involved in the war, referenced as the Lost Generation, the survivors of World War One left with a view of ‘no purpose in life’ holding a vastly nihilistic view meaning that Hemmingway similarly uses alcohol to depict his character boredom, discontent and lack of any real motivation. Coward particularly used phrases such as â€Å"teeniest† in order to make Nicky’s character seem in control of his substance abuse emphasising it to be a nonchalant recreational past time. Furthermore the reference to it being â€Å"once in a blue moon†, creates the illusion that Nicky has it under control and shows it to be a rare occurrence, however the audience know otherwise.
